![]() It's too bad, really, since, while they're not perfect, Secrets is always a chain we have recommended to others. Maybe we just caught a bad week, I don't know. So we are not just used to "mega resorts" in the Riviera Maya. We've stayed at all different size resorts ranging from Aventura Spa Palace (1200 rooms), to Sol Caribe (4 rooms before they expanded to a whopping 8 rooms) & everything in between. And, we know how things usually work at these types of resorts. This was our 2nd time to Cozumel, our 8th vacation at a Secrets resort, and, overall, our 50th Caribbean/Mexican vacation, so we do have a lot to compare this trip to. We always try to speak as much Spanish as we are able to. Also, plenty of colorful language from the groups. Or wearing your swimming trunks & t-shirts to dinner. Or yelling across the restaurant for the waiter to refill your wine glass (yet again). Call me crazy, but bringing your Bubba Keg to dinner at the French restaurant is not appropriate, nor is belching out loud, really loud, in a restaurant appropriate either (& then laughing about it). Something else that added to the "ambiance" at the resort was the "classy" behavior of many other guests. There is obviously something that is not working right (maybe kitchens are too small ? not enough equipment ?) for the food to take that long to come out & for it to NEVER be too hot to just bite right into. And, it seemed like they were understaffed, so they could have just been overwhelmed & unhappy because of that. I do have to say that I believe that the resort was at full occupancy. Obviously there were exceptions to that blanket statement & we did meet some really nice people too (Marcos at Oceana, Fabiola over at the wine cellar, the very sweet girl at Ocean, Mariela maybe ? can't for the life of me remember right now), Jesus/Chuy, the sommelier to name a few). Most of the staff we encountered never cracked a smile. ![]() I can't tell you how many times we were told "no" to various questions & requests. ![]() Lunch was easily well over an hour at Oceana, more than once. The food almost always ranged from luke warm to cold & it took absolutely forevvvvvvvvvvvver to come out. Just there last week & if they gave us a free trip there, we wouldn't take it. Secrets Aura was one of the worst resorts we've ever stayed at. ![]()
